Hacía mucho tiempo que no veía a Liam. Fue en un hotel en Cape Town, quizás en 2003, o 2004. Estábamos hasta arriba de ácido* y acarreábamos tres noches sin dormir. La luz del mediodía hacía sangrar nuestras pupilas a pesar de los cristales oscuros de nuestras gafas de sol. Hacía al menos 20 horas que no sabíamos nada de Noel, ni del resto de los chicos. Tampoco le preocupaba lo más mínimo. "Saben cuidarse solitos", solía decir.
Fue entonces cuando se retiró las gafas, me miró a donde se suponía que estaban mis ojos y, sin verme en realidad, me preguntó: "¿Realmente crees que la gente me quiere?" "Y yo qué sé, tío", le respondí. Estrelló una botella de dios sabe qué contra la pared, se sentó en el sofá y se puso a ver carreras de caballos en la tele por cable, dándome la espalda. "¡Juego mi papel, es lo que esos de ahí fuera quieren de mi!", gritó.
Me serví una copa de algo que pillé en un armario cualquiera. "No sé -le espeté-, tal vez si no tuvieras esa manía tan tuya de apenas dirigirte al público, de quedarte pasmado mirándole como única forma de empatizar, de hacer la estatua mientras la banda hace sus partes instrumentales, esa forma de aplaudir con desgana cuando lo que en realidad quieres es que todo el mundo te haga el ritmo con las palmas, con esa manía de preocuparte más por subirte el cuello de la parca tres cuartos que de centrarte en cantar, si tuvieras más gestos aparte de agarrar la pandereta con los dientes o lanzarla y dejarla colgada en el micro... no sé, vaya, se me ocurre, es que tienes un aspecto de pintamonas pendenciero que no hay quien lo soporte".
El silencio posterior a mi diatriba supongo que podría calificarse como tenso, pero a mi me importaba más bien poco en mi lamentable estado. Hasta que le dio la gana romperlo. "¿Y las canciones? ¿Qué pasa con las malditas canciones? Al final de eso se trata, y tenemos las mejores canciones del mundo. ¡Dime una sola banda que tenga mejores temas que nosotros!", planteó, con cierto tono violento. "Sois tremendamente grandes, sois los clásicos que más rápido han alcanzado ese estatus. Desde que publicasteis What's the story morning glory os convertisteis en uno de los grupos más grandes del planeta. ¿Eso es lo que querías escuchar? Bien. Espero haberte ayudado. Suerte con la bajada al mundo de los vivos. Nos veremos, supongo". Me despedí.
Cuatro, cinco, seis o siete años después andaba yo pasando unos meses en Madrid, entretenido con mis cosas. Todo hijo de vecino hablaba de la resurrección de Oasis, de lo buen disco que es Dig out your soul (2008) y de que volvían a la carretera en muy buena forma. Venga, está bien, comprobémoslo, me dije.
De primeras, el que si estaba en forma era el público madrileño, que se entregó a la causa petando el Palacio de los Deportes hasta el máximo de su aforo (16.000 almas, algunas negras). Cientos de adolescentes que aprendían a andar mientras Oasis pateaba culos con sus dos primeros discos, treinteañeros con ganas de revivir sus años de instituto y universidad, cuarentones que entonces eran veinteañeros. Todos juntos cogidos de la mano como en una jodida secta.
Un Fuckin' on the bushes pregrabado, un Rock 'n' roll star para ecualizar, un Lyla para apabullar a ritmo marcial. Sí que estaban en buena forma, sí. El lugar es una olla a presión. Algunas canciones nuevas (The shock of the lighting, algo plana pero tan dura como una grúa demoliendo cimientos de esos gordos), y el clímax gracias a Cigaretes & alcohol, Slide away, la acertadísima Morning glory. "Estos de brit pop más bien poco -pensé-, aquí hay mucho rock de alto voltaje. Aunque en realidad, ruidosos siempre fueron". A la gente le gustó que Liam se pirara de vez en cuando y dejara al frente a Noel (hasta cinco veces, tal vez seis si la memoria no me falla).
Porque Oasis tienen eso con lo que sueñan muchos grupos: dos voces, dos caras, dos planteamientos, ambos notables. Suenan los primeros acordes de Wonderwall y me acuerdo de aquel Liam casi suplicante. ¿Y las canciones? ¿Qué pasa con las malditas canciones? Esa es la clave y él lo intuía. Tal vez ahora ya lo tenga confirmado y por eso no se nieguen a tocar su artillería pesada. Porque a Wonderwall le sucede como a los Ramones, que ambos son más grandes que la vida.
Pero en estas que cuando parece que ya no se puede subir más, Noel se arrimó como buen torero a Don't look back in anger y resulta, para mi sorpresa, que ésta fue todavía mejor. Todavía mejor, menuda barbaridad, menuda cima inalcanzable para cualquier mortal. Esas dos canciones son el ticket para la inmortalidad de los dos hermanos macarras de Manchester, y bien valen un lugar en la historia del rocanrol. O del pop, o como cada uno lo quiera llamar.
Daba vértigo mirar desde tan alto, pero ya sólo quedaba bajar. Apoyados en Champagne supernova y I am the walrus se bajó firme y seguro. Se dejaron un montón de buenas canciones en el tintero, pero tocaron algunas de mis favoritas. Al final parece que Liam tenía razón. Después de todo se trata de canciones, más allá de polémicas en los tabloides o de poses altivas y chulescas. El chico tampoco es ya lo que era. Ya no parece que quiera degollar a su hermano.
No se puede decir que se entregara, como tampoco se entregó el resto (entiendo entregar por moverse un poquito y caer en algunos cuantos clichés rockeros), pero incluso se atrevió a dedicar alguna canción a las chicas de las primeras filas, otra al público del fondo del pabellón e hizo el mico con los músicos ('aceptad vuestro papel de gregarios' que diría el Bono Nui). Tampoco le pidais más al chaval. Es una estrella del rock con enormes canciones que defender. Esa es la clave.

Galko, no lo dudes, si Tardà ha dicho que el 29 y 30 en Junio estarán en Bcn en el Nou Camp, que por otra parte es lo que se estaba barruntando estos días, U2 estará en Bcn. He seguido la trayectoria de Jordi Tardà a lo largo de muchos años y si lo suelta es que lo sabe de buena tinta, como el Sr. Rafa B... que filtro lo del Kobetasonic, entre otras cosas pq el esta detrás de la organización.
De oasis, la verdad es que paso.
